Profile Evaluation and GMAT retake

by ameyrane22 » Mon Mar 31, 2014 5:55 pm
Hello,

I would like a profile evaluation and your views on whether I should re-take the GMAT. If I were to re-take I am aiming to take it by mid-May or mid June. My target schools are - NYU, Columbia, Yale , Kellogg. I want to apply for Fall 2015.

I am :

- Indian male , 25 years old

Education/GMAT
- Undergrad - BS. Computer Engineering (Top 10 engineering school in the Midwest) GPA: 3.53/4.00
- Not many extra-curricular activities during undergrad ( Some mentoring for High school Robotics competition).
Extremely demanding coursework did not leave enough time for other activities
- GMAT - 710 (48Q/40V) . Taken in December 2012

Work:
- Currently working as Senior Software Engineer at a top Financial Analytics Firm in New York. Joined in July 2010 (3.5 years of experience)
- First 2 years at job I worked as a Junior ABS modeler - Wrote code to structure Asset Backed Securites/cashflow engine. Became a domain expert on few asset sectors.
- After that transitioned into a more core software role but was always assigned projects involving mentoring and interacting with people.
- Organized, led and mentored a team of 20 offshore consultants who were working on the monthly update project for a continuous period of 6 months
- Travelled to the offshore site to provide hands-on training

Extra Curricular.
- Mentored and tutored middle schoolers in Math once every week through a non-profit volunteering organization .The objective of the organization is to to help students who are performing poorly in Math at school learn the fundamentals of Math. I have been involved in this organization every school year since 2011.

Hi there,

So you've got a 710 GMAT, which is certainly solid. Probably slightly lower than the average of similar applicants (Indian males with engineering backgrounds), fyi. Not a bad score so borderline on re-taking. I wouldn't say you HAVE to re-take, but it wouldn't hurt IF you truly thought you could really improve. So it may be a personal assessment on how much more prep/improvement you think may be possible and your time/effort you can invest etc.

Keep in mind acceptance is more than just the GMAT (though a strong GMAT is very important)... schools want individuals with interesting backgrounds, with leadership/management experience or potential, who can demonstrate in a compelling way WHY they need this MBA, how they'll contribute to the class, and why that school is right for them. So don't underestimate the importance of the essays to show all of those aspects. Beyond that it can come down to how candidates stack up against other applicants... and right now you would be in a competitive applicant group without too much to help you stand out. The volunteering experience is a plus and drew me in a bit, so depending on how important this is to your life and how much you can talk that up, it could help. But right now I would suggest considering some schools outside the top 15 or so for better chances, just to keep things realistic. Wishing you the best, keep us posted on questions and your progress.
