Any chance of getting to these schools?

by C Okigbo » Thu Dec 31, 2015 7:40 pm
Hi experts,

Could all the experts out there comment about my chances of admission at the following schools: INSEAD, Kellogg, Fuqua, Tuck, Ross, Yale and Wharton. My background is as set out below.
  • GMAT; 660 (79%), 45Q (57%) 36V(80%)
    Age 34
Black African male doing M&A tax in one of the big 4 in NYC. I worked in the same company (back in Africa) for 7 years - joined as an associate and was manager by the time of my transfer to NYC.
Very very strong quantitative experience in my resume.
Undergrad in Economics from an African college. Obtained second class honors upper division - sorry I don't know the equivalent of this in GPA but in British system, it would be equivalent to 2.1.
Chairman of a student organization in college
member of an NGO - raised over $50K (lots of money in Africa) during the period I served in the board.
    Bi-lingual
Actively involved in community work in NYC
[/list]Do I stand any chance considering the way Africa is underrepresented in major B-Schools around the world?

Thanks in advance!
Okigb

Thank you for posting your profile.

Being from Africa does help with the diversity angle. However, your GMAT score is below the mean for the schools you are targeting. Some programs look at Q to be at the 70% -80% range to assure that you will be able to keep pace with the academics. You would do well to play up your strong quantitative highlights.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi there,

I would take the GMAT one more time, especially if you've only taken it once. Also, you're an older candidate. Most of the schools you're targeting have median ages of 27-29. You'll need a compelling case for why you want an MBA now to answer the AdComms fear of not being able to place you come graduation. Maybe it's worth considering other program options - 1-year, part-time, or executive MBAs. Have you thought about whether you'd be a better fit in these programs instead of a full-time option? Take a look at our videos on how to decide on MBA programs here.

Are you only considering full-time programs or are you looking at part-time or executive programs? With your age a couple things come to mind. First, you would be better positioned at a PT or EMBA. You also probably make a decent salary and foregoing two years of that may not be ideal.

See my blog post below about some of the trade-offs and send me an email if you want to chat further about how I can help you with your applications. [email protected]

Your GPA is ultimately what will really hurt you hear your GMAT particularly as a diverse candidate is close enough in range if you had a good GPA but your GPA is very low so you should retake and aim higher to balance out a bit more

    Dear,

Even though schools have an average age of admission, the claim your higher age is a reason to deny admission is a myth. However as mentioned before, your GMAT score is a challenge considering the programs you consider applying to.
My advice is that you apply as early as possible, either in round 1 or early admissions.

    Dear,

Even though schools have an average age of admission, the claim that you are old for admission is a myth. However as earlier mentioned, your GMAT score is a challenge considering the programs you consider applying to.
My advice is that you apply as early as possible, either in round 1 or as a early bird

Thank you all for the comments.

I took a leap of faith and submitted my application during R2 and I am happy to report that all the schools including Wharton interviewed me. I am now waiting on the admission decisions by the end of this month.

It's going to be a business decision - whoever gives me good funding among Tuck, Haas and Duke will carry the day. I believe all are great programs that take me wherever I want to go post MBA.
