1 Day to go...

by GMAT4PHD » Sat Nov 15, 2008 10:14 am
Well I have steadily studied for the past 6 weeks. I am taking the GMAT on Mon Nov 17th at 8AM. I have come to the conclusion that if I don't do well this time, i will fork over the cash and take a GMAT Prep Course. I know I'm sounding defeated even before I take the test but as I study and take the practice tests, I seem to keep getting stuck and panicking. I don't even know where to begin! I do the practice questions well and have gone over them time and time again. I will do the full length test today and tomorrow. I was just hoping that I could do well and miraculously pull off a 650-700 score which would allow me to get into the PhD Program. If this doesn't work, I will just take the Prep course and hope that will help me get the scores I need. I just feel bad asking my professors for recommendations again. One of them actually retired but I was lucky enough to have another one on standby. I'm just freaking out already at the thought of having to go through this crazy studying process all over again. I don't know how people work and go to school part-time. It is a draining process to say the least. Okay! Enough "Woe is me" talk. I will do the full length practice test and post my score later.

While your post was more of a confessional and a rant, I wanted you to know it was heard, and that there are still things you CAN do before Monday.

First, what I would recommend is that you TAKE TOMORROW OFF. Think of this like a marathon. You have said you put in the work, so now, let your brain do its job...and let it rest a bit tomorrow.

Second, lets initiate a 'non-panic' and 'non-stuck' pact. Give yourself the space and trust that you're going to do your best, and if your best means that you'll need to allow the material to waft through your conscious and unconscious mind. GOOD. Let it do just that. You're not a computer. So sometimes it takes TIME. That is a given. SO you just need to accept that your brain, while it's like a computer - - the most powerful one in the world - - you'll need to give it some wiggle room. The harder you are on yourself, the more difficult the test will seem. SO, figure out how you can have a 'non-panic' MO tomorrow and Monday.

If it turns out that you'll need to work with professionals, know that it will be completely different than how you've been working - - or it should be. Studying on ones own is a completely doable format to take the test, however, if you're not meeting your goals, getting help or guidance will get you there in the most efficient, effective way. Nothing to freak out about. But if you're freaking out...save that for after Monday. Then we can discuss how to CHILL.

But see if you can chill now, and tomorrow.

Believe it, and it can be done. If not Monday, at the most appropriate time.

Trust that the universe knows what it has in store for you...

GMAT Test Prep 2

by GMAT4PHD » Sat Nov 15, 2008 1:26 pm
Thanks for the words of wisdom and encouragement! :D

I have studied as much as I can. The results from the GMAT Test Prep 2 are: Q 41 (17 wrong), V 29 (14 wrong), Total Score: 580

I did find a technique helpful with pacing myself: Jotting down the time as I start a question. It helped me stick to the 2 minute (1 3/4 minute) timeframe. If I didn't know the answer by then, I made an educated guess.

We will see how this all turns out around 11AM Monday morning.

Keep Hope Alive!

Hey,

I would like to comment on your meticulously going through each question and jotting the time down - - but we'll talk about it AFTER your test.

In general, do your best to not micro-manage yourself on Monday. Remember that some questions will take longer, others, shorter lengths of time.

Do keep us in the loop...and yes, may the force be with you, and within you.

and don't forget to breathe deep!

Hey, I am going through the same dread of 1 day left. I am taking the GMAT tmr at 1pm. So far my prep scores weren't great as they still stick around 630-650, and my target score is 680+.

Looking for some advice to boost my quant score from 46 to 49 if it is ever possible.

Btw, gd luck tmr mate! I think we both need it.

Well the timing strategy isnt that helpful since I had a lot of time left over at the end but it does help to know if I'm over the timeframe or not. The last time I took the test I ran out of time and had to guess at the end. I was concentrating on answering the problem instead of analyzing the answers and making an educated guess. That is a lesson learned. I appreciate all the helpful insights into the test.

A point you might want to consider: rename calling the 'problems' 'questions' ...I'd rather answer questions than deal with a bunch of 'problems.' It's semantics, for sure, but still...so many people view the GMAT as a BIG PROBLEM...that constantly refering to questions that way is sure to affect test takers (I've seen it). I suggest you difuse (and divest) implications the word 'problem' has....

Good Luck...

Well I completed the GMAT and unfortunately I do not have a success story. I received a 560 (breakdown will be added later). SO, I will take a prep class to help me get my score up. Obviously, studying on my own has not worked thus far. Any suggestions on which prep course works the best? I've heard Manhattan GMAT but I'm not sure if it is offered in my area.
