by bingojohn » Wed Aug 15, 2007 11:56 am
Please help me with this one:

21. A proposal has been made to trim the horns from rhinoceroses to discourage poachers; the question is whether tourists will continue to visit game parks and see rhinoceroses after their horns are trimmed.

(A) ...
(B) whether tourists will continue to visit game parks to see one once their horns are
(C) whether tourists will continue to visit game parks to see rhinoceroses once the animals’ horns have been
(D) if tourists will continue to visit game parks and see rhinoceroses once the animals’ horns are
(E) if tourists will continue to visit game parks to see one after the animals’ horns have been

'the question is whether' is correct. 'If' implies a conditional statement. 'The question is if' is incorrect. D and E are out.

In A and B, 'their' is ambiguous. It might refer to tourists or rhinos. So, C is correct.
Also, in A, the purpose is to visit and 'to see'. Not, 'and see'.
So It Goes

1) whether/if --> Whether D&E are gone
2) their ( tourists/rhinoceroses) - ambiguity A is out

B is out one & their

to visit parks AND to see --> and distorts the meaning

So we are left with C, which is the correct answer.

"their" is not ambiguous. As a pronoun, it refers to the closest noun which is rhinoceroses. However, A and B are wrong because "their" can't be used if you don't know the gender of the noun. I.e. in sentence A... if you replaced "their" with "his or her", the sentence would be correct and I think would trump C.

C is wordy but in the absence of any other valid choice, remains correct...

....or I could be wrong about the above ;-)

So you are saying that we can not use THEIR because we dont know rhinoceroses are whether girls or boys

I think so... I'd like someone to reconfirm though. The above rule is something I learnt at Kaplan.

Another example:

"Everyone needs their own pencil" - although this sentence is widely used, it is wrong. It should read... "Everyone needs his or her own pencil"

it is not a gender issue it is PLURAL - PLURAL or SINGULAR -SINGULAR matching

(C) is correct.
In (B), it seems the tourists' horns are getting chopped off !

Correct answer is "C".

C clears pronoun error and trimming is an ongoing process. so, it should be present perfect "have been"

I feel their is not ambigous , Horns cannot logically refer to tourist as the sentence talks about Rhino's Honrs in the first part so I vote for A
