Since we do not know out of 30, how many puppies are on the left and on the right, we cannot calculate how many of the puppies are female. Insufficient.BTGmoderatorDC wrote:If a total of 30 puppies is displayed in the two windows of a pet store, how many of the puppies are female?

Let's see how.
Say there are x number of puppies on the left, thus, there are (30 - x) number of puppies on the right.
From Statement 1, we have number fo female puppies = 1/4 of x = x/4. And from Statement 2, we have number fo female puppies = 1/3 of (30 - x) = (30 - x)/3
Total number of female puppies = x/4 + (30 - x)/3 = 10 - (x/12)
Since 10 - (x/12), the values of x could be 12 or 24 since x < 30.
If x = 12, we have the total number of female puppies = 10 - (x/12) = 10 - (12/12) = 9; however,
If x = 24, we have the total number of female puppies = 10 - (x/12) = 10 - (24/12) = 8.

The correct answer: E
Hope this helps!
