A certain diet program calls for eating daily calories from carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in the ratio of 40:30:30 respectively. On a certain day, did Bill follow this diet program? (1 gram of fat contains 9 calories, 1 gram of protein contains 4 calories, and 1 gram of carbohydrates contains 4 calories)

1) One of the meals Bill ate contained 80 grams of carbohydrates, 60 grams of protein, and 60 grams of fat.
2) Bill ate 1500 calories during the day.

It's a potentially confusing question, because the 40:30:30 ratio in the stem is the ratio of the "daily calories" from each source, while the numbers in Statement 1 are measured in grams, not in calories. So at first glance, looking at Statement 1, it might seem Bill followed the diet exactly for that one meal, but he wasn't even close to following the diet -- if you use the calorie conversions mentioned at the end of the stem, he ate 320 calories of carbohydrates, 240 calories of protein, and 540 calories of fat, so nearly 50% of his calories came from fat, instead of the 30% the diet requires.

Statement 1 isn't sufficient though, because he could have eaten twelve other meals that day, and with no information about those meals, we have no clue if he followed the diet. Statement 2 isn't sufficient alone either, because we have no idea what Bill ate. Using both Statements, if his diet requires exactly 30% of his calories to come from fat, then if he follows the diet, and eats 1500 calories total, he eats 450 calories from fat. But as we saw above, Statement 1 tells us in just one meal Bill ate 540 calories of fat, so there's no chance that he followed the diet, and the answer is C.

Statement 1
One of the meals Bill ate contained 80 grams of carbohydrates, 60 grams of protein and 60 grams of fat.
Thus, statement 1 only provides information about one meal that Bill ate.
Carbohydrate = 80 * 4 = 320
Protein = 60 * 4 = 240
Fat = 60 * 90 = 540
Since there is no information about other minds of the day, statement 1 is INSUFFICIENT.

Statement 2
Bill ate 1500 calories during the day. It is difficult to get the exact ratio don't know the proportion of carbohydrates, Protein and fat.

Statement 1 and 2 together
Carbohydrate, Protein and fat are expected to be in the ratio 40 : 30 : 30 with respect to the daily calorie intake.
30 % of 1500 = 450 calories [For fat]
From statement 1 =' Bill took 540 calories which is more than the recommended 450 calories in his diet.
We can now ascertain that Bill did not follow his DIET.
Statement 1 and 2 together are SUFFICIENT.
