In this piece, we have been saddled with the responsibility of choosing the option that directly captures the mind of the writer in terms of the linguistic sense.

Option A:- Incorrect
It actually shows that the writer is only trying to "draw inference" from the written experiences of the "ancient writers". What it didn't explain was the reason why the option A isn't different from the question statement.

Option B:- Incorrect
Linguistic- wise, this statement is continuous in all sense with the usage of the ing but it contradicts the timing of the events which should have taken the past tense form.

Option C:- Incorrect
Here, the meaning of the underlined statement has changed in that "For a basis" means it's going to be used for a particular subject i.e basis. it could suggest some other meaning in when not taken into context.

Option D:- Incorrect
In as much as this option statement is simplistic enough it still fall short of some basic linguistic terms. For instance, the last part explaining "they used" isn't necessary and it's not fitting into the option statement. It falls low.

Option E:- correct
The option explains that "taking clues" and "updating memories" about past happenings that's been documented by ancient writers, scholars have their work cut out in providing more insights to the issues at hand.
