124 = D + R
R= D+18
124 = 2D + 18
D = 53
R =71

let number of democrats be represented as D
number of republican represented by R
now we know D+R=124 ----(equation 1)
given
If there are 18 more republicans than democrats R=D+18 ---------(equation 2)
putting the value of R from equation 2 in equation 1:
R+D=124
D+18+D=124 since R=D+18 ---------(equation 2)
D=53
So R=124-53=71
so we can conclude there are 71 Republican in legislature
number of republican represented by R
now we know D+R=124 ----(equation 1)
given
If there are 18 more republicans than democrats R=D+18 ---------(equation 2)
putting the value of R from equation 2 in equation 1:
R+D=124
D+18+D=124 since R=D+18 ---------(equation 2)
D=53
So R=124-53=71
so we can conclude there are 71 Republican in legislature

We can create the equations:
R + D = 124
And
R - 18 = D
Thus:
R + R - 18 = 124
2R = 142
R = 71
Answer: C
