124 = D + R

R= D+18

124 = 2D + 18

D = 53

R =71

let number of democrats be represented as D
number of republican represented by R
now we know D+R=124 ----(equation 1)

given
If there are 18 more republicans than democrats R=D+18 ---------(equation 2)
putting the value of R from equation 2 in equation 1:
R+D=124
D+18+D=124 since R=D+18 ---------(equation 2)
D=53
So R=124-53=71

so we can conclude there are 71 Republican in legislature

We can create the equations:

R + D = 124

And

R - 18 = D

Thus:

R + R - 18 = 124

2R = 142

R = 71
