Let´s use UNITS CONTROL, one of the most powerful tools of our method!

\[? = 1{\text{h}}\,\,\left( {\frac{{60\,\,\min }}{{1\,{\text{h}}}}\begin{array}{*{20}{c}}
\nearrow \\
\nearrow
\end{array}} \right)\,\,\left( {\frac{{40\,\,{\text{widgets}}}}{{8\,\,{\text{min}}}}\begin{array}{*{20}{c}}
\nearrow \\
\nearrow
\end{array}} \right)\,\, = \,\,\,\underleftrightarrow {\frac{{60 \cdot 40}}{8}} = 300\,\,\,\left[ {{\text{widgets}}} \right]\]

This solution follows the notations and rationale taught in the GMATH method.

Hi All,

We're told that Machine X can make 40 widgets in 8 minutes. We're asked for the number of widgets it can make in 1 hour. This question is a straight-forward rate question and you can probably see that you can quickly determine the rate (in widgets/minute) of the Machine.

40 widgets/8 minutes = 5 widgets/minute

Over the course of 1 hour (re: 60 minutes), Machine X would create (5)(60) = 300 units.

Final Answer: D

8 mins ~ 40 widgets
Divide by 8 both the sides:
1 min ~ 5 widgets
Multiply by 60 both the sides:
60 min ~ 300 widgets

Hence, machine will produce 300 widgets per hour.

Since 1 hour is 60 minutes, Machine X can make 40/8 x 60 = 5 x 60 = 300 widgets.

Alternate solution:

We can set up a proportion in which x is the number of widgets that can be made in 1 hour, or 60 minutes:

40/8 = x/60

5 = x/60

300 = x
