California Highway Expert: A recent study determined that expensive sports cars account for only 5% of all traffic on our state highways, yet nearly 25% of all people that were ticketed for exceeding the speed limit were driving expensive sports cars. We must conclude that people who drive expensive sports cars are more likely to speed recklessly than people who do not.

The argument above depends on which of the following questionable assumptions?

A. Many of the people who were driving expensive sports cars received numerous speeding tickets during the period in which the study took place.

B. California drivers exceed the speed limit more often than drivers in other states.

C. People driving expensive sports cars are less likely to receive a speeding ticket than people who drive other types of vehicles.

D. People who receive speeding tickets are more likely to speed recklessly than people who do not.

E. People who have received at least one speeding ticket are more likely to have been in an accident than those who do not.

Option A - INCORRECT.
According to the information given, it is possible that during the period at which the study took place, 25% of people driving expensive sport cars received numerous speeding tickets, but how come only 5% was recorded for causing traffic?

Option B - INCORRECT.
It is wrong to assume that California drivers exceed the speed limit more often than drivers in other states. Factually knowing that there was not record for other states indicated in the argument.

Option C - INCORRECT.
With proper understanding of the argument which says that expensive car owners get ticketed more than other types of cars, there was no record of other types of cars in the argument, therefore this option is false.

Option D - CORRECT.
This option correctly support the above argument. People with speeding tickets are more likely to speed recklessly than people who do not. This is because, the ticket fee is relatively cheap for them to afford, hereby prompting them to overlook it and be careless about the fee since it is affordable whereas, they forget to review their reckless speed limit.

Option E - INCORRECT.
This is incorrect and doesn't support the argument. One cannot say that people who have received at least one speeding ticket are more likely to have been in an accident than those who do not, because, receiving tickets do not justify that the person have been in an accident before. There are people who have been ticketed but have not been in an accident and there are people that have had accident in the past but have not been ticketed before.
