1) John paid $459 for the computer
2) x = 10%
Given: x% discount is applicable to the whole amount if it is above $500.
Question: Did John get the discount?

Let's take each statement one by one.

1) John paid $459 for the computer.

If the list price is $459, John did not get the discount; however, if list price was above $500, he may would have got the discount and $459 is the price after the discount. No unique answer. Insufficient.

2) x = 10%

No information about the list price. Insufficient.

(1) and (2) together

Case 1: If the list price is $459, John did not get the discount.
Case 2: Say the list price was above $500, John got the discount of 10%, and paid $459.

Let's compute the list price.

List price = 459 / (1 - 10%) = 459/0.9 = 459*10/9 = $510 > 500. John may have got the discount of $51.

No unique answer. Insufficient.

The correct answer: E

Hope this helps!
