To find out: Is t < 0?
Let's take each statement one by one.
(1) -1 < r < 0
No information about t. Insufficient.
(2) The distance between R and T is equal to r^2
No information about the placement of r and t on the number line. Insufficient.
(1) and (2) together
Say r = -1/2, thus, r^2 = 1/4
Case 1: t is further away on the negative side of the number line, thus, t < 0 and its coordinate = -1/2 - 1/4 = -3/4
Case 2: t is away on the positive side of the number line, thus, the coordinate of t = -1/2 + 1/4 = -1/4; t < 0.
Thus, t < 0. Sufficient.
The correct answer: C
Hope this helps!
