Let John's budget = $100.
Since 72% of the budget is spent on fruit, the amount spent on fruit = $72.
Since 54% of the budget is spent on apples, the amount spent on apples = $54.
What percent of the money spent on fruit was not spent on apples?
Of the $72 spent on fruit, the amount not spent on apples = 72-54 = 18.
Thus:
(non-apple fruit money)/(total fruit money) = 18/72 = 1/4 = 25%.

The correct answer is B.

Hello M7MBA.

Let's see your question.

Let's suppose that Jonh's budget is $100.

John spent 72% of his budget on fruits (including apples) - this implies that John spent $72.

54% of his budget on apples - this implies that John spent $54 on apples.

What percent of the money spent on Fruits were not spent on apples? - here we are asked for the percent of the money spent on fruits, not the percent of the budget.

Now, since John spent $72 on Fruits then it represents the 100%. Also, John spent $54 on apples and we want to know how many % of the $72 it represents.

We can find it as follows:

$72 --------- 100%
$54 --------- x

Then $$x=\frac{54\cdot100}{72}=75\%.$$ This tells us that John spent 25% on fruits that were not apples.

Therefore, the correct answer is the option B.

I hope it helps.

Hi M7MBA,

We're told that John spent 72% of his budget on fruits (including apples), and 54% of his budget on apples. We're asked for the percent of the money spent on fruits were NOT spent on apples. This question can be solved in a couple of different ways. TESTing VALUES works really well on these types of questions (as Mitch and Vincen has shown). It can also be solved with Algebra.

Total Money = $X
Total spent on all fruits = (.72)(X)
Total spent on apples = (.54)(X)

Total fruit money NOT spent on apples = .72X - .54X = .18X
Percent of fruit money spent on apples = .18X/.72X = 18/72 = 1/4 = 25%

Final Answer: B

C) 32%
D) 49%
E) 52 %
Let's say John's total budget was 100 dollars. Since he spent 72% of his budget on fruits (including apples), and 54% of his budget on apples, he spent 72 dollars on all fruits and 54 dollars on only apples. Thus, he spent 72 - 54 = 18 dollars on fruits other than apples.

Thus, the percentage of money spent on fruits that was not spent on apples is:

18/72 = 1/4 = 25%
