OG 10th Edition Q 74

by nishant_1010 » Sun Mar 25, 2007 12:22 am
74. Many breakfast cereals are fortified with vitamin supplements. Some of these cereals provide 100 percent of
the recommended daily requirement of vitamins. Nevertheless, a well-balanced breakfast, including a variety
of foods, is a better source of those vitamins than are such fortified breakfast cereals alone.
Which of the following, if true, would most strongly support the position above?
(A) In many foods, the natural combination of vitamins with other nutrients makes those vitamins more usable
by the body than are vitamins added in vitamin supplements.
(B) People who regularly eat cereals fortified with vitamin supplements sometimes neglect to eat the foods in
which the vitamins occur naturally.
(C)Foods often must be fortified with vitamin supplements because naturally occurring vitamins are removed
during processing.
(D) Unprocessed cereals are naturally high in several of the vitamins that are usually added to fortified
breakfast cereals.
(E) Cereals containing vitamin supplements are no harder to digest than similar cereals without added
vitamins.

Ans A. I chose D. Plz explain why D is wrong

The argument is about fortified cereals vs. a well balanced breakfast including a variety of foods.

(A) strongly supports the argument.

(D) Unprocessed cereals are naturally high in several of the vitamins that are usually added to fortified breakfast cereals.
Unprocessed cereals are already high in vitamins and then these vitamins are again added to these cereals. How does this support the argument of comparing fortified cereals to well balanced breakfast?

This is a strengthen question. we have to find out a reason why a balanced breakfast is better source of vitamins than are cereals alone .

A gives that reason. The body can probably absorb those vitamins supplements only with the addition of other foods and nutrients. Hence if you have breakfast cereals alone, vitamin supplements would serve little purpose

Does D explain why you should have a balanced breakfast and not cereals alone?--no. It does not even address the issue of balanced breakfast and is hence irrelevant.

Don't have much explanation, but A seems good.

Many breakfast cereals are fortified with vitamin supplements. Some of these cereals provide 100 percent of the recommended daily requirement of vitamins. Nevertheless, a well-balanced breakfast, including a variety of foods, is a better source of those vitamins than are such fortified breakfast cereals alone.

Which of the following, if true, would most strongly support the position above?

(A) In many foods, the natural combination of vitamins with other nutrients makes those vitamins more usable by the body than are vitamins added in vitamin supplements.
Only this option provides a reason to why a well-balanced breakfast, including a variety of foods, is a better source of those vitamins than are such fortified breakfast cereals alone.
Rest all the four options are irrelevant.

(B) People who regularly eat cereals fortified with vitamin supplements sometimes neglect to eat the foods in which the vitamins occur naturally.
so what? it does not provide a reason why a well-balanced breakfast, including a variety of foods, is a better source of those vitamins than are such fortified breakfast cereals alone. Option B has no impact on conclusion.

(C) Foods often must be fortified with vitamin supplements because naturally occurring vitamins are removed during processing.
That's good, but why a well-balanced breakfast, including a variety of foods, is a better source of those vitamins than are such fortified breakfast cereals alone. Option C has no impact on conclusion.

(D) Unprocessed cereals are naturally high in several of the vitamins that are usually added to fortified breakfast cereals.
similar to option C.

(E) Cereals containing vitamin supplements are no harder to digest than similar cereals without added vitamins.
We are not at all concerned with digestion. We are concerned why well-balanced breakfast, including a variety of foods, is a better source of those vitamins than are such fortified breakfast cereals alone. Option E also has no impact on conclusion.

Very Easy Question.

Option D is concerned with unprocessed cereals, but the conclusion is related to a well balanced breakfast. Option D is having NO IMPACT on the conclusion. So, its wrong.

The correct answer must support the conclusion that a well-balanced breakfast is a better vitamin source than is a fortified breakfast cereal..

A: In many foods, the natural combination of vitamins with other nutrients makes those vitamins more usable by the body than are vitamins added in vitamin supplements.
Here, vitamins in a well-balanced breakfast are more usable than those in cereal supplements, SUPPORTING the conclusion that a well-balanced breakfast is a better vitamin source than is a fortified breakfast cereal.

The correct answer is A.

(D) Unprocessed cereals are naturally high in several of the vitamins that are usually added to fortified

Conclusion -> a well-balanced breakfast, including a variety of foods, is a better source of those vitamins than are such fortified breakfast cereals alone.
Option D is concerned with unprocessed cereals, but the conclusion is related to a well balanced breakfast. Option D is having NO IMPACT on the conclusion. So, its wrong.
i also ask myself why choice d is wrong. spending a long time, I see that choice D is relevant but not strong enough quantitatively. in choice D, "several of vitamins" is wrong. if "all of vitamins " is insert, choice D is correct.

this is the reason why choice D is wrong
