Harold works at a resort from the beginning of March to the end of September. During the month of August this past year, he made 3 times the average (arithmetic mean) of his monthly totals in tips for the other months. His total tips for August were what fraction of his total tips for all of the months he worked?
A. 1/3
B. 2/5
C. 3/7
D. 1/2
E. 4/7
The OA is A.
I solve this PS question as follows,
The trap: 7 months in total, but you need to exclude August from the calculation
Thus, August = 3 x Average of the remaining 6 months = 1/6 x 3 = 3/6 = 1/3 reduced.
Please, can anyone explain another way to solve it? Thanks!

Excluding August, let the average earned each month = $1, implying that the total earned for the 6 non-August months = 6*1 = $6.BTGmoderatorLU wrote:Harold works at a resort from the beginning of March to the end of September. Since 3 times the average is earned in August, the amount earned in August = 3*1 = $3, bringing the total earnings to $9.
Resulting fraction:
August/Total = 3/9 = 1/3.
The correct answer is A.

If we let the average of the 6 months besides August = n, then the sum of the tips of these months is 6n.
Thus, during August he made 3n.
August's tips, as a fraction of the total tips, is:
(3n)/(3n + 6n)
3n/9n = 1/3
