Let x = 100.
Since y is 80% greater than x, y = 100 + (80/100)(100) = 180.

x is what percent less than y?
In other words:
What is the percent decrease from y=180 to x=100?
Percent decrease = Difference/Larger * 100 = (180-100)/180 * 100 = 4/9 * 100 = a bit less than 50%.

The correct answer is D.

Hello vjesus12.

I would solve it as follows:

If x=100 then y=180. Therefore, the difference between x and y is 180-100=80.

Then the percent decrease is $$\frac{Difference}{Total}\cdot100\%\ =\ \frac{80}{180}\cdot100\ \%\ =\ \frac{4}{9}\cdot100\ \%\ \approx44.44\%$$ Hence, the correct answer is the option D.

We can let y = 1.8x; thus:

(x - 1.8x)/1.8x * 100 = -0.8x/1.8x * 100 = -8/18 * 100 = -44 4/9 = 44 4/9 percent less
