An airplane displays trip information to passengers in two way: how much time is left in the flight, and what percentage of the trip duration has been completed. When Curtis first checks the display, the clock reads 5:50, meaning that there are 5 hours and 50 minutes left for the trip, and the display shows that 12.5% of the trip has been completed. What will the clock show when the trip is 50% complete?

A. 2:00
B. 2:25
C. 2:45
D. 3:10
E. 3:20

The OA is E.

I'm confused by this PS question. Experts, any suggestion about how can I solve it? Thanks in advance.

5hr and 50 min to go = 87.5% of the trip
350 min = 7/8 of the trip --> multiply both sides by 4/7 to get to 50%!
200 min = 4/8 trip = 1/2 trip = 50% of the trip --> make sure you convert back the minutes to hr/min format!
3hr 20 min = 50% of the trip

Hi LUANDATO,

We're told that an airplane displays trip information to passengers in two way: how much time is left in the flight, and what percentage of the trip duration has been completed. When the clock reads 5:50, the display shows that 12.5% of the trip has been completed. We're asked for the time that the clock will show when the trip is 50% complete. We can use the Answer choices 'against' the prompt and TEST THE ANSWERS.

To start, knowing basic fraction-to-decimal conversions will save you some time on Test Day. Here, 12.5% is 1/8; the trip is 1/8 complete when 5:50 is left on the clock. This implies that the ENTIRE trip is certainly more than 6 hours in length (since there's no way that 10 minutes is 1/8 of the trip) and HALF the time would be greater than 3 hours. Thus, the correct answer must be either D or E.

Let's TEST Answer D) 3:10
IF HALF the trip would take 3:10, then....
the FULL trip would take 6:20

6:20 = 6 hours 20 minutes = 6(60) + 20 = 380 minutes
6:20 - 5:50 = 0:30 = 30 minutes
(380 minutes)(1/8) = over 40 minutes
These 2 values do NOT match one another, so this CANNOT be the answer. There's only one Answer left...

Final Answer: E
