LEMAGICIEN, IMO - E. Because, the first clause has to be in present perfect tense and the second phrase should start with the word - "FACE" to maintain the parallelism.
Correct me If I am wrong

Yes I think also E is...
But I was a little bit hesitating because of the absence of the second "to" before "face"...

'had?' the use of 'had' is not proper here as it does not follow proper tense structure. This makes this option incorrect.

Option B.
This optiom\n suffers the same fate as Option A above.

Option C.
This option is incorrect because 'elected to retire' is considered over 'elected retiring'. This makes this option incorrect.

Option D.
This option would have been the correct option but the use of 'facing' is not proper and the word is just dangling.
Thus, this option is incorrect.

OPtion E.
'rather than face'. This is the best logical construction, and thus, it is best considered as the best option. So, E it is.
