Paper based test # 14 -- 4 & 5

by hopefully » Wed Jul 18, 2007 9:02 pm
Last year, land values in most parts of the pinelands rose almost so fast, and in some parts even faster than what they did outside the pinelands.
(A) so fast, and in some parts even faster than what they did
(B) so fast, and in some parts even faster than, those
(C) as fast, and in some parts even faster than, those
(D) as fast as, and in some parts even faster than, those
(E) as fast as, and in some parts even faster than what they did

-------------------

Dirt roads may evoke the bucolic simplicity of another century, but financially strained townships point out that dirt roads cost twice as much as maintaining paved roads.
(A) dirt roads cost twice as much as maintaining paved roads
(B) dirt roads cost twice as much to maintain as paved roads do
(C) maintaining dirt roads cost twice as much as paved roads do
(D) maintaining dirt roads costs twice as much as it does for paved roads
(E) to maintain dirt roads costs twice as much as for paved roads

Please post each question in a separate post. It keeps everything focused on a topic and organized.

4. Answer: D
A & E - Irrelevant phrase "what they did"
B - violates idiom "so that"
C - violates idiom "as fast as"

5. Answer: D
A, B, C and E - Comparision is wrong.

A and E are out as they use incorrect "they" which lacks a correct
referent i.e. land values cannot be referred back using "they"

B "so fast ... those" is awkward and incorrect

C does not use the correct idiom "as fast as"

Leaves us with D.

A - Incorrect comparison - cost to maintaining

C - Incorrect comparison - cost of maintaining dirt roads to cost of paved
roads

D - no clear referent for "it"

E - awkward

Hence B

Option A.
This option is incorrect. The use of 'they' to describe 'land values' is completely wrong. Thus, this option is incorrect.

Option B.
This option does not use the proper idioms 'as fast as'. Therefore it is wrong.

Option C.
the correct idiom is 'as fast as' but this option is not obeying the fact. Thus, this option is not corrcet.

Option D.
This is the correct option as it follows proper parallelism and good sentence construction.

Option E.
This option suffers same fate as option A because the use of 'they' is improper.
