by VJesus12 » Sun Oct 15, 2017 5:43 pm
A particular printer can print 96 pages in 25 minutes. How many minutes does it take 2 such printers to print 48 pages?

A. 6 minutes and 15 seconds
B. 12 minutes and 30 seconds
C. 25 minutes
D. 50 minutes
E. 100 minutes

The OA is A.

Why is A? It should be D. Shouldn't it? Experts, I really appreciate some help here.

96 pages per 25 minutes is a bit less than 4 pages a minute, so 2 machines together can print a bit less than 8 pages.

48/8 =6, and because they can print a bit less than 8 pages a minute it must be 6 minutes and 15 seconds.

Break the question into two parts to simplify what's going on.

If 1 printer can print 96 pages in 25 minutes, how long would it take 2 printers to print 96 pages ? Half as long, right ? Which is 12.5 minutes.

So, you've captured the effect of adding another printer assuming 96 pages are being printed. Now, the question is saying the new number of pages is 48, which is half the original amount. Makes sense that it would take half the time.

So, 1/2 x 12.5 min = 6.25 min captures the impact of doubling the number of printers and halving the number of pages

Hi VJesus12,

Sometimes these types of rate questions can be complex, but this one is actually pretty straight-forward. It might help to think of the 'math steps' one at a time though (instead of trying to use all of the information all at once.

To start, we're told that particular printer can print 96 pages in 25 minutes. This is our 'baseline rate.' If we double the number of pages, then we would double the amount of time that it would take the printer. If we halve the number of pages, then we would halve the amount of time needed. If we double the number of printers, then we halve the amount of time needed.

The questions asks for the number of minutes that it would take 2 such printers to print 48 pages.

48 pages is HALF of 96 pages, so 1 printer would need HALF of 25 minutes = 12.5 minutes to complete the print job. We have 2 printers though, so since we're doubling the number of printers to do the same amount of work, we would halve the amount of time needed:

12.5/2 = 6.25 minutes = 6 minutes 15 seconds

Final Answer: A

B. 12 minutes and 30 seconds

D. 50 minutes
E. 100 minutes

Hi VJesus12,
Let's take a look at your question.

The question states,
A particular printer can print 96 pages in 25 minutes.
Since, 48 pages are half the 96 pages, therefore, the printer will take half the time to print half the pages.
It means, the printer will take 25/2 = 12.5 minutes to print 48 pages.

How many minutes does it take 2 such printers to print 48 pages?
One printer takes 12.5 minutes to print 48 pages.
2 printers will take half the time,
i.e. 12.5/2 = 6.25 minutes
= 6 minutes + 0.25 minutes
Lets convert 0.25 minutes into seconds
= 6 minutes + (0.25)(60) seconds
= 6 minutes and 15 seconds

Therefore Option A is correct.

D. 50 minutes
E. 100 minutes
The rate of 1 printer is 96/25, so the rate of two printers is 2 x 96/25 = 192/25.

Thus, it will take 2 printers 48/(192/25) = (48 x 25)/192 = 25/4 = 6 ¼ minutes = 6 minutes 15 seconds to complete the job.
