consultancy startup

operations team, also now venturing towards strategic promotion and client
acquisition roles.

leverage the same through my business acumen.

Can you please advice me on the school selection? Also would applying in Round 2 be a major disadvantage?(vis a vis scholarships, waivers, etc). I intend to increase my GMAT score. However, if at all I apply wih this score, which univs should I apply to?

My Preferences:
Duke
Columbia
NYU

Hey there,
Good to hear from you.

Seems like your work experience is solid and that you are moving along at a nice pace. It's hard however for me to judge the strength of your position as CTO, since I dont know enough about what you have actually done.

Your volunteer work should also be a great strength.

However, you also do have many weaknesses in your profile which make your school list not very realistic.

You come from what is unfortunately the largest and most competitive pool in B-school applications - Indian/Tech/Male.

You come from a non-target UG program with a low GPA for Top schools.

And your GMAT is about 40-50 points too low for such programs.

So I have two suggestions: first of all, consider moderating your school list, and secondly, if you believe you can get a better GMAT score, you should retake! Even if this means delaying your application by a year.

Here's an article about Indian candidates and retaking the GMAT, which you may find useful:

Thanks Jon for your inputs.
I guess I wasnt very vivid with the startup details. I decided to co-found the startup along with two banking guys. We provide mutual funds & PMS consulting solutions to our clients taking them through mainly equity, debt and liquid investment solutions.Initially we all decided to take it up part-time, however with significant traction, they have now been working full-time with it. However, I am still full time with my firm and learning the ropes going forward.
Hailing from a technical background, I was initially handling backend operations such as clients' KYC registrations, registrations of the firm with fundhouses, handling any transaction fallthroughs, mapping of the data with Investwell, setting up of the application, etc.

However, going forward I hired two backend guys for assistance since I am now also majorly involved in the frontend work: acquiring clients(entailing extensive networking), suggesting investment courses with new & existing fundhouses(after thorough analysis ofcourse) taking our AUM to a whopping sum making us a platinum level brokerage firm with most key fundhouses.

I feel this has been a crucial learning curve for me and a relative departure from my stint at the software firm and is also more aligned with my long-term goals to venture towards consulting, which is what drew me to the proposal in the first place. Please advise if this can be a signifiant highlight.

Also if you can please help me with the translation of 10-point based CGPA's to 4-point grades in the US. My CGPA translates to 80% as mentioned in my Univ docus. Would that be a downer? Also if I have an improved GMAT by R2, do I stand a good chance this year? Thanks so much for your inputs.

Hey,
so it seems like you have been doing some mighty interesting stuff, and you can think a bout how to integrate that into your application when the time comes around.

For your GPA - you don't need to translate it. It will be considered as is. An 8+ is pretty good for Indian candidates (they will of course also consider the school from which this grade comes)

As for the GMAT - if you hit that score, yes absolutely you can apply this year. My only additional advice: Don't rush it. It's not the end of the world if you work one more year, but you DO want to get the best GMAT score you can, so if you are feeling you need more time, take it. OF course if you CAN make it, then go for it.

Hope this helps,
Best,
JF
