Smokers - nicotine kills bacteria, but it also kills chemicals that are used to fight such bacteria
Non-smokers - chemicals are present that are used to fight bacteria
So if the gum disease bacteria is not vulnerable to nicotine then smokers are more likely to have that disease because chemical antibodies are not present in their bodies to fight bacteria.
