Request for Profile Evaluation

by geesingsn » Wed May 04, 2016 1:11 pm
Hi Admissionado,

I'm currently evaluating my chances for top MBA programmes and just looking to see where you think I stand. Any evaluation or advice would be much appreciated!

White male, Western European (Netherlands) 28 years old at time of matriculation.

Education:
Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Economics/Econometrics from top European school, considered the top school in my home country. GPA: 4.0.
Research Master (Mphil) degree in Economics from the University of Oxford, UK, with distinction (highest honours)

GMAT: 750

Work:
-1 year as an analyst for a mid-market private equity firm active in the Benelux region of continental Europe between undergrad and grad school. Significant deal experience. Heavy focus on operational work with portfolio companies, designed market entry and expansion strategies for the Asian market for three companies. Also set new standards for the fund's origination strategy, these standards are still in use today (4 years later).
-2 years as fellow (analyst) at one of the MBB consultants in a large Western European office. Top performer. Worked in projects in a variety of fields and geographies (Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia, North America).
-Internships include internship with the same private equity company I worked with for a year, a summer internship with the consultant I currently work for and an internship with another of the MBB consultants.

Extracurriculars:
-Various pro bono projects during my time at MBB (most recently for a chocolate company campaigning for slave-free chocolate).
-Worked as a volunteer for the local foundation for sustainable integration, which aids recent refugees to the Netherlands with finding their way in Dutch society.
-One year as full-time board member of my undergrad institution's student association for students in Economics.
-Founded an association which teaches students about social enterprise through a case challenge. Within this project we realized an ambulance service for Karachi Pakistan's lower classes as well as a sustainable irrigation business providing irrigation solutions in rural India. Personally designed and delivered workshops on micro finance and development economics.
-Various academic positions: research assistant, teacher of undergraduate tutorials and recitation sessions etc.

Post-MBA Goals:
I hope to continue working as a consultant for several years (up to Engagement Manager level to gain some management experience), hoping to exit to industry after that. Also playing with the idea of starting my own company with a few of my colleagues but this is still vague.

Schools under consideration:
Harvard, Wharton, Kellogg, MIT, Columbia, INSEAD (due to age/opportunity costs and preference for working in Europe I'm leaning towards INSEAD)

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello there,
Overall your profile is very strong. You come from a good country with the right GPA and the right GMAT. Your employers are amongst the best you can have going into business school. And you seem to have done some great stuff there too.

But for me where your profile truly stands out is in your extra-currilculars - we can see that you are involved and impactful, not to mention that it will make for some very good stories.

Probably, your greatest difficulty in writing the application will be finding the write balance so that you are most effective at each school.

I think you can stick to your school list (and basically apply within Top 10 both Europe and the US). Your age isn't an issue. But if the one-year program appeals to you, you can consider other one-year programs in the US as well.

I hope this helps,
Best,
Jon
