Hi,

I am a Program Manager with a top Product MNC in IT in India and have 12 years of experience overall across services IT firms. Previously, I read Physics @ Delhi University and have a MBA from a top 15-20 school in India. I am targeting a 1 yr program stanford MSx, MIT Sloan Fellow, Kellogg Accelerated to join in 2017 for career progression.

I wanted to enquire on a GMAT waiver option available:
1) mit Sloan Fellow program - I applied for one, when can I expect to hear back from them?
2) Do Kellogg and Stanford offer the same?
3) How does this affect my chances of getting a scholarship?

The general idea is to focus more on work right now (engaged with a IT macro trend) and pick up further certifications like CSPO, Stanford APM etc over the year rather than spending 300+ hours on increasing my GMAT score from the current 650 that I am getting in mocks.

Also, with my current situation I would only be able to submit my full app (including GMAT score) by Deadline 2 for these schools (Dec-Jan).

Hello there,
Good to hear from you! Allow me to answer your questions:
So GMAT waivers are the exception rather than the rule. If you are serious about doing an MBA you will need to take the GMAT and to get higher than a 720.

Secondly, I don't know enough about your profile, but it seems like you might be overly ambitious here. You have proposed some of the toughest (if not THE toughest) one-year programs that exist, and you have some weaknesses:
- No GMAT
- Older candidate
- Indian/Male/IT
- You have an MBA

Now, I'm sure you have other great stuff in your profile, but for the moment taking into the consideration the above profile weaknesses and your competitive pool I think these programs would be very challenging for you to get accepted into.

So, my first suggestion would be to reconsider if your target schools are truly realistic,
Best,
JF

Thanks for the reply Jon, appreciate your interest here.

My interest is to target the Tier 1 schools only and definitely in the US, I am not considering European institutions for the dwindling job opportunities there. The primary interest in a 2nd MBA is to pivot out of mid-career stagnation that next 6-10 yrs offer on the beaten path. IT Consulting and Product Management are the 2 directions I am keen on in putting my background to good use post MBA to being able to target Sr. Mgmt jobs thereafter with a good B-School brand backing and immersive academics on general mgmt subjects.

So yes, GMAT is on then and 720+ to target and 1 year option as being away for 2 yrs from industry has a lot in opportunity costs for me and I made up my mind only after going through the profiles of the current 1 year batches where a 2nd MBA and Indian candidates do form a % of the total set.

Yes, Indian IT Males apply en mass, but I have some width in my cultural set which should set me apart having worked out of 11 cities over the last 12 years (6 in India reset abroad) I am currently engaged in the Cloud technology division of Adobe and have been picking up industry friendly certifications regularly (more this year) esp. APM from Stanford.

Should I be looking at CornellTech MBA as well? Although I haven't been able to gather any online reviews on it !!

Let me know should this provide you more information and maybe strengthen my case as well :-)

Tx,
BU.

Hello there,
Good to hear from you,
So of course getting the best GMAT you can is the first step towards succeeding in this process. Targetting the schools you are is tough, but okay, allow it to be tough, and give it your shot. You are certainly right that if it doesn't fulfill your goals, then there's no point. But at the same time, it's important that I be upfront about the challenges, to allow you to adjust your target schools if necessary.

One thing I may not necessarily agree with is your statement that "there re dwindling job opportunities in Europe". I'm not a job market expert, but I do see what my clients graduating from European programs do, and many of them get great jobs in Germany, Switzerland, UK (yes, even despite visa issues) France... so it depends on the country, on the city, on your target job... there may be more options there than you think.

But first things first - your ability to make it into a top 1-year program will be greatly increased if you can top a 720 on the GMAT.

I hope this helps!!!
Best,
JF
