Possessive

by jain2016 » Thu Nov 19, 2015 8:17 am
Hi Experts ,

Can you please advise that why the one sentence is wrong and the other is correct on the same topic.

1) Having topped his class throughout school, Tim's grades did not surprise anyone. ( Why this sentence is wrong OR why the uses of Possessive is wrong in this sentence?)

2) While they did not work last year , the company's strategies, analysts believe, may just bear fruit this year. ( Why this sentence is right OR why the uses of Possessive is right in this sentence?)

Please explain experts.

Thanks in advance .

Focus on meaning!

Having topped his class throughout school, Tim's grades did not surprise anyone.

ask yourself who topped the class....is it TIM'S GRADES who toped or is it TIM who topped the class?

Correct: Having topped his class throughout school, Tim did not surprise anyone.

While they did not work last year , the company's strategies, analysts believe, may just bear fruit this year.

Who didn't work last year? is it the company or the strategies(plural)

definitely strategies.

Also they is there in first part and refers to plural strategies and can't refer to singular company.

Hope this helps!
