Weight of vinegar / total weight of solution = 4/10
Weight of vinegar / 12 = 4/10
Weight of vinegar = 4.8
To make a 25% vinegar solution: we need to add x oil
4.8 ounce of vinegar / (12 + x)ounces = 25/100
480 = 300 + 25x
180 = 25x -> x = 7.2
Therefore we need to add 7.2ounce of oil

Since the 12-ounce vineger-and-oil-mixture is 40% vinegar, the amount of vinegar = (40/100)(12) = 4.8 ounces.
Since the resulting mixture must be 25% vinegar, these 4.8 ounces of vinegar must constitute 25% of the resulting mixture:
(4.8) = (25/100)x
4.8 = (1/4)x
19.2 = x.
Since the total volume increases from 12 ounces to 19.2 ounces, the amount of added oil = (new volume) - (old volume) = 19.2 - 12 = 7.2 ounces.

Hi GMATGuruNY,
How can we solve this problem by using alligation method?
I solved it but I couldn't find the answer:
40-----------25-----------0, so, V:O is 5:3.

The original 5 parts of "Vinegar & Oil" are the same and we are adding only the 3 parts of "Oil"talaangoshtari wrote:Hi GMATGuruNY,

5 parts = 12 ounces
3 parts = 3 * 12/5 = 7.2 ounces
