This is a question relating to subject and verb agreement. Let's a have a look.

a. Subject: Each of .... - Verb: were --> incorrect
b. Subject: ...-each of..- Verb: were ---> incorrect
c. Subject: Hemingway's wives...-Verb: were ---> correct
d. Subject: Strong and interesting women- Verb: was ---> incorrect
e. Subject: Strong and interesting women- Verb: was ---> incorrect

I go with c
