The model of education has been the same for centuries , the model that compromises of physical classes, lectures, classroom assignments and examination has not even had a slightly change, though we had experienced tremendous technological advancements and information technology growth but the education model has remained the same as it was before Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon. Fortunately today there are some educationalists that have been raising questions and there are even some colleges that have made efforts to change this years old model of education. This has been due to certain factors that had raised concerns and colleges have started thinking on the effectiveness of the currently followed physical education model and distance educationis rising as an excellent alternative to this traditional years old education model. The most important factor of online education is convenience which has brought a crisis in the education industry, resulting in a shortfall not only in admissions to the universities but also decreased the quality of admitted students as the brightest minds.
The students in physical university academic programs are having a hard time to come up with sufficient investments to continue their academic degrees. The rising cost of education is linked with the increased administrative cost of universities which is because the governments are no longer subsidizing the university education programs like they used to. Also there has been significant investment by universities in new technologies, teacher salaries and maintenance and upgrade of huge campuses to technological centers. Analysts have predicted the impact of this obsolete education model to be the largest in United States with several institutions filing for bankruptcy in the coming years. In the same time the rapid burst of information technology and the technological revolution has made learning far more easy and affordable online and with the advent of online learning students are able to learn anything online for almost free and the option of distant learning degree programs. These programs have contributed largely to the crippling of the ages old traditional education model. The blast of online education and e-learning has provided a way for the students to have the same amount of knowledge that once only few lucky ones had through the distance learning and distance education concept now. So getting an online degree from a distance education program is not a bad option these days in the United Arab Emirates region.

I would like to contribute a bit of my experience here.

I have attained MBA degree through online medium as well as through classroom process.

The two mediums can' be compared and in my opinion Classroom process is much more effective because MBA is not an education focused on just one aspect of management and the amalgamation of various cultures, work background, real time discussion with fellow students is so effective that it can't be even approached with Online MBA which is so confined to specific type of material and approach.

However when it comes to the education focused on a specific objective e.g. preparing for some competition which has limited boundaries and whose objective is attained by standalone performance then online medium can be great help as it doesn't require much of discussion and requires more of guiding forces from mentors.

But in lack of resources like monetary investment online medium can't be overlooked because technology can contribute to the knowledge to the great extent.

The future of education basically lies with the technological facilities that educational institutes have to offer to students. Online degree programs and courses that are provided to students online so that they can initiate and progress in their education at a proper pace

So in general I don't think online education is all it is cracked up to be. From a learning style the big difference is the interaction with your fellow classmates. It is really heard to duplicate the experience of being in a classroom. The ability to create a dialog in real time is one thing distance learning hasn't been able perfect yet. However, HBX Live is one of the best examples I've seen yet at trying to make that happen. Obviously, you also lose a lot on the social and group activities with distance learning.
