Is 30 old for an MBA?

by yashita » Tue Dec 23, 2014 11:50 pm
Is it too late for me to think of doing an MBA at the age of 30? I recently took the GMAT and scored a low 580. Planning to take it again after a month, but I am in danger of missing the deadlines for 2015. What are my chances of being admitted (target school INSEAD Singapore) if I apply this year or worse still, next year(I'll be 31yr old)?

I have 8+ years of experience in Healthcare IT(Deloitte) and I want to switch to management consulting post MBA.

Any input regarding my prospects@MBA would be greatly appreciated

Hey,
30 is NOT to old! But 580 is way way too low. Chances of getting accepted at INSEAD with a 580 are zero... so better to apply next year after you have retaken. (Plus anyhow the average age at INSEAD is around 30-31, so you'll be the PERFECT age!)

Best,

I know 580 is very low and I was planning to re-take the GMAT but most MBA graduates I spoke to told me it was the end of MBA dream for me - as 31 would be too old for an MBA and most colleges will ask me to apply for exec-MBA. Also, even in consulting industry, chances of employment would be slim. Is that true?

For US MBAs 31 is starting to get a bit on the older side, and that will make things a bit more difficult, but actually in many European programs, the average age is around 29-31, so you are good even for another 2-3 years.

Thanks a lot for your replies Jon! And I am mostly targeting INSEAD - so I guess I should still give it a try!
