Need recommendation for 2nd MBA

by confused_frustrated » Fri Nov 07, 2014 12:39 am
Hi,

I am planning to give GMAT in Feb 2015 and look for a 1 year international MBA. Here are the details:

My profile:

99.8 Percentile in CAT 2006
GPA 3/4 MBA
GPA 8.7/10 B Tech
MBA from Top 5 Indian B school, Majored in Sales and Marketing
At B school, won national level competitions
B Tech from top tier engineering college
20+ Prizes in Inter college and Inter school debating, Quizzing throughout College and School
Cracked a top consult from campus in 2009 - recession year

Hobbies:
Badminton,
Cycling (Did 100km road trip last month),
Trekking / Mountaineering - scaled Everest Base Camp this year. Graduate from Himalayan Mountaineering Institute

Work Ex:
2 years business transformation consulting for a Telecom Client (Pre MBA)
2 years strategy advisory for a global research firm
3.5 years with an IT company (1 year product sales, 2.5+ years corporate strategy)

Married. Wife works with an NGO and teaches children from slums. I help out over the weekends.

Reason for 2nd MBA:
Primary: I have made some bad career moves in my career, which have been further hampered by sheer bad luck. I am trying for a job change for last six months, but my current profile - internal strategy in a smallish global IT firm has restricted my options here. I will need a fresh start.
Secondary: I want to work abroad for a few years. Again my current profile there is a slim chance i will get the opportunity.
Third: I love studying and don't mind an academic career later.

My Plan:
I am not even targeting top b-schools, I am thinking more mid-rung b-schools with good job prospects. I haven't started my research yet but i want to go for a one year plan. I want to work in consulting space. I am not fixated on US and Uk and am open to other campuses.

Need Advice:
I am thinking if second MBA is the answer. Can i be honest and share my motive with the admission teams? What are some other courses that i could consider?

Hey dude,

For mid-tier schools you should be fine as long as your GMAT.

And doing this second MBA is not only possible, it even make sense. I've worked with a bunch of Indian candidates who wanted a second MBA for reasons such as those you stated. And basically, as long as it makes sense from the perspective of the school, and as long as your school list is reasonable, there's no reason for you not to have as good a shot as about anyone else.

Best,
JF
