MBA post Teach For India Fellowship

by Sneha Sudge » Mon Oct 06, 2014 10:37 pm
Hi,

I have certain questions. I want your opinion on these questions which will help me to take the right decision.
I want to know that to what extent will a fellowship help me to get admitted to a MBA program in one of the to 20 colleges. I'm looking forward to attend Teach For India Fellowship- https://www.teachforindia.org/fellow-shi ... ooking-for.
The selection criteria for this fellowship is in par with some of the Ivy-league colleges like INSEAD with acceptance rate between 7-10%. I want to know will this fellowship help me in making my application/profile strong enough to get admitted to one of the top 20 colleges. The objective of the fellowship is to create leaders who will work towards eradicating inequality in education. Keeping the same objective in mind, I want to pursue MBA post fellowship which help me to broaden my knowledge and help to build some strong networks and connections.

My Background:
Work Exp: I'm a Software Engineer. Working at a Product Development Company from past 3 years.

Qualification: Bachelors of Engineering from one of the top institute in India(Pune Institute of Computer Technology- PICT)
GPA: 3.3
GMAT: Targeting around 700-730

I have also completed a online diploma program in Entrepreneurship in Business Development from EDII(Entrepreneur Development Institute of India, Ahemdabad )

Extra Curricular Activities: Volunteer with an NGO- Door Step School, from past one year. A core committee member of their English Teaching Program. Also help them in managing their social media presence like preparing news letters, managing Facebook and Google+ pages.

Your advice or opinion will be very helpful.

Hey there,
Well the Teach for India thing is truly a wonderful thing, both in terms of what you are ACTUALLY doing, and it can be great bonus for your profile if it fits with your goals. But, just the fact that it is selective, does not mean that you will get into a very selective Ivy League college. The two things have little to do with each other.

Now, if you have GOALS to change your career towards non-profit/education and you can fit this TFI fellowship into this, then awesome!!

When are you planning on applying?
And what schools are you looking at?

Well I do not plan to shift to non-profit/education. What I plan to do is to bring technology and education together. My plan post MBA is to be a part of High Tech company(Something like Google) and find technology solution for the problems faced by low income schools in India or be a part of its CSR team in India.

Teach For India(TFI) Fellowship will help me to understand the problems faced by low income schools both on administration level and academic level. I am not sure if TFI will open doors for me to a High Tech companies. So I would like to pursue MBA post TFI Fellowship. More over and MBA degree will also expose me to different areas like Marketing, Finance and Operation.

I come from an Engineering background in Computer Science so post Fellowship would continue to remain IT industry and play my role of improving the state of education in India.

Schools I'm interested in are- Tepper, Cornell, Texas-Austin, Indiana.
May also try for MIT and Berkley but I don't know if these are realistic targets.

Sounds like you have a good plan there!

And if you can get a GMAT that is on the higher end of your proposed score, than the schools you mentioned should be within range.

Now, all you gotta do, is do it!
:)

And this may help you, if you are thinking about Top schools: https://admissionado.com/mba/resources/t ... b-schools/

All the best,
Jon

Yeah I do have plan. Planning to take the GMAT soon and hope I achieve more than I target :)

Do you think the schools that I'm targeting will help me to achieve my goals? Looking for schools with good opportunities in CSR, Non-Profits and Technology. Any suggestions from you?

To be honest, all top 20, even top 30, 40 schools can get you into such industries. The question is then: at what company, at what level, and at what salary?

If you want to go into Tech, you CAN of course think about the Tech-strong schools, but at the same time it does not mean that if you graduate from Kellogg or UNC which do not necessarily have a Tech strength that you won't get a great Tech job!

My advice: Don't worry too much about industry. Instead just go to the best schools you can get into.

Which, in order to really figure out, you will need your actual test scores...
:)

Good luck!

Hi Sneha,

I'm glad to read that Cornell is one of your target schools for your MBA. I work in admissions and would be happy to help answer any questions you might have about our programs and requirements. With your engineering background and interest in tech, our one-year MBA program in Ithaca may be a good fit for you or even our new Johnson Cornell Tech MBA program in New York City.

If you want to connect or chat, please feel free to email me. I'm here to help!
