by aditya8062 » Mon Sep 08, 2014 11:26 am
SC 1: In addition to having more protein -than wheat does, the protein in rice is higher quality than that in wheat, with more of the amino acids essential to the human diet.

(A) the protein in rice is higher quality than that in
(B) rice has protein of higher quality than that in
(C) the protein in rice is higher in quality than it is in
(D) rice protein is higher in quality than it is in
(E) rice has a protein higher in quality than

the correct answer is B here

SC 2: According to recent studies comparing the nutritional value of meat from wild animals and meat from domesticated animals, wild animals have less total fat than do livestock fed on grain and more of a kind of fat they think is good for cardiac health.

A.wild animals have less total fat than do livestock fed on grain and more of a kind of fat they think is
B.wild animals have less total fat than livestock fed on grain and more of a kind of fat thought to be
C. wild animals have less total fat than that of livestock fed on grain and have more fat of a kind thought to be
D. total fat of wild animals is less than livestock fed on grain and they have more fat of a kind thought to be
E. total fat is less in wild animals than that of livestock fed on grain and more of their fat is of a kind they think is

the correct answer is B here

my doubt: i want to know as why the construction "than that in wheat" in option B in SC 1 is correct but the similar construction "than that of livestock" in option C of SC 2 is wrong

There is an important difference between the two comparisons.

SC1: Rice has PROTEIN OF HIGHER QUALITY...
Here, of higher quality is AN ADJECTIVE modifying protein, serving to compare ONE TYPE OF PROTEIN to ANOTHER TYPE OF PROTEIN.
OA: Rice has PROTEIN of higher quality than THAT in wheat.
Here, that is standing in for protein.
Implied comparison:
Rice has PROTEIN [that is] of higher quality than the protein in wheat [is of high quality].

SC2: Wild animals HAVE LESS total fat...
Here, less is an ADVERB modifying have, serving to compare how wild animals HAVE total fat to how other types of animals HAVE total fat.
OA: Wild animals HAVE less total fat than livestock fed on grain.
Implied comparison:
Wild animals HAVE less total fat than livestock fed on grain [HAVE total fat].
The words in brackets are omitted, but their presence is implied.

C: Wild animals have less total fat than that of livestock fed on grain.
Here, that is standing in for total fat.
Implied comparison:
Wild animals HAVE less total fat than the total fat of livestock fed on grain [HAS total fat].
The words in brackets are omitted, but their presence is implied.
The resulting comparison is nonsensical.
Eliminate C.

Hello Mitch, can C also be interpreted as:

wild animals have less total fat than [wild animals have] total fat of livestock fed on grain

Hi Mitch,
If we consider Option A as : the protein in rice is higher quality than that [=PROTEIN ] in wheat [is].

How it'll be wrong COMPARISON ? Can you please Clarify ?

A: The protein in rice is higher quality.
This wording implies that protein is a type of quality -- a nonsensical meaning.
Eliminate A.
Since the meaning is nonsensical, the comparison issue is moot.
