Assumption

by prateek9567 » Thu Aug 21, 2014 6:35 am
Some writing teachers believe that writing is best accomplished by creating a rough draft very quickly, and then editing and re-editing through many drafts. Recently, however, a survey of best-selling authors found that these authors most frequently write very slowly, spending more time on the first draft, and then publish the manuscript with little editing. Authors of books that are not best-sellers write the first draft more quickly, and then rewrite and re-edit. This shows that writing more slowly is the most effective method for producing high-quality manuscripts.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the conclusion is based?

A) Writing quickly and then rewriting many drafts of a manuscript is not useful in creating certain types of manuscripts.

B) Best-selling authors are able to write either quickly or slowly, and create many or few drafts of a manuscript.

C) At least some writing teachers lead their students to write slow first drafts with little editing.

D) Best-selling authors write slowly and create few drafts in creating the majority of their manuscripts.

E) Best-selling authors create higher quality manuscripts than do authors of books that are not best-sellers.

OA: E

Why is D wrong? I think it is better than the correct answer.

First you must find the conclusion:

Writing slowly = quality manuscripts

There are assumptions about this:

Sales determine the quality of a book

The reason D is wrong is because while true it does not relate to the conclusion.

Hi prateek9567,

Answer E is correct because it helps "fix" a potential problem with the conclusion. What I mean by "fix" is the assumption upon which the conclusion of the passage is based. The potential problem is the unsubstantiated idea that "best-selling" is the same thing as "high quality." It might not be. It could be that best-selling authors produce low quality manuscripts that happen to be popular. Answer E "fixes" the potential problem because it clearly links the two concepts, suggesting that, in fact, there is a relationship between "best-selling" and "high quality." Specifically, that the quality of manuscripts produced by best-selling authors is high.

Answer D is just a restatement of the facts already presented in the passage. Restating what is already in the passage does not "fix" the potential problem by revealing an assumption.

I hope this helps.
