by vipulgoyal » Mon Jun 23, 2014 10:51 pm
During a conversation with Stacy's parents, the teacher mentioned that Stacy
had shown considerable ability in literature and to learn foreign languages

(A) considerable ability in literature and to learn
(B) considerable ability in literature and that she could do it well in
(C) ability that was considerable in literature as well as in learning
(D) ability considerably in literature and in
(E) considerable ability in literature and in

E why B is wrong, It maintains the //sm by compairing clause with clause

Hi vipulgoyal,

This SC is built around Parallelism rules, meaning that you MUST compare LIKE things AND you MUST do so in "Parallel format."

Based on the way the answer choices are written, the correct parallel phrases will follow the following format:

"....in _______ and in ________....."

Answer B includes a bunch of "extra" words that are not parallel (the words "....and that she could do it well..." in the second phrase are not parallel with anything in the first phrase).

There is also a Modification issue in this SC; the modifier should be "considerable", not "considerably."

Final Answer: E

+1 for E
(A) considerable ability in literature and to learn - parallelism issue
(B) considerable ability in literature and that she could do it well in - parallelism issue
(C) ability that was considerable in literature as well as in learning - awkward, too wordy
(D) ability considerably in literature and in
(E) considerable ability in literature and in - correct
