Heating oil prices

by umaa » Thu Aug 13, 2009 1:55 pm
Heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this year than last because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel more for crude oil than they were last year.

A. Heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this year than last because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel more for crude oil than they were

B. Heating-oil prices are expected to rice higher this year over last because refiners pay about $5 a barrel for crude oil than they did

C. Expectations are for heating-oil prices to be higher this year than last year's because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel fr crude oil more than they did

D. It is the expectation that heating-oil prices will be higher for this year over last because refiners are pauing about $5 a barrel more for crude oil now than what they were

E. It is expected that heating-oil prices will rise higher this year than last year's because refiners pay about $5 a barrel for crude oil more than they did

Which one do you think is right?

THEY WHERE or THEY DID?

E. It is expected that heating-oil prices will rise higher this year than last year's because refiners pay about $5 a barrel for crude oil more than they did

"they did" should be better but overall 'E' doesn't seem to be a good choice. I think it should be "are paying"

IMO - A for this one

in sentence E, I am bothered by the comparaison:

... more this year than last year's...

it is not parallel.

What do you think?

Thanks.

I agree, its A . Rise and higher are redundant.

OA is A. But my question is, Don't you think the last sentence should end with THE DID?

I feel THEY WERE is reduntant here.

Not convinced with OA.
In choice A- they in the subordinate clause refers to refiners or prices. (its not clear)
Correct me if i am wrong

I think contextual usage matters here rather than right or wrong...
They did is correct when you say ......the refiners pay.....more than they did (pay)

They were is correct when you say ......the refiners are paying.....more than they were (paying)

Q1

Is it that, Since A ends with THAN THEY WERE (paying) it's correct

But In E we have MORE THAN THEY DID (pay) and previous part is REFINERS PAY
so why E is rejected here ??

Q 2
There is yet another example

In an effort to reduce their inventories, Italian vintners have cut prices; their wines (have been priced to sell, and they are.)

a. have been priced to sell, and they are
b. are priced to sell, and they have
c. are priced to sell, and they do
d. are being priced to sell, and have
e. had been priced to sell, and they have
here IS is C

Is it that , we must place a logical VERB at the end and check whether it's parallel ?

I feel E is better compared to A.

"they were" at the end is incorrect..

In E "rise higher" is redundant...

Can someone please tell me valid reasons for rejection of E?
