Cars in Clifton

by psm12se » Sun Jan 19, 2014 6:10 am
Car dealers in the town of Clifton have discovered an antique car in an abandoned garage. Newspapers that were found in the garage indicate that the car dates from sometime between 1885 and 1915. However, the car probably dates to no earlier than 1905, since the car was built to run on gasoline, and the first gasoline-powered cars manufactured in Clifton were produced in 1905.

A. For the first twenty years of car manufacturing in Clifton, cars manufactured elsewhere were more popular than locally produced models.

B. The antique car has a unique steering wheel design that is found ony on cars manufactured in Clifton.

C. The upholstery on the car's front seat dates from no earlier than 1930, so clearly someone was aware of the car's presence long after it was first purchased.

D. A car that dates from before 1900 would be considerably more valuable to collectors than a car dating from 1905.

E. Car manufacturers in Clifton were among the last in the country to switch production to gasoline-powered cars.

An antique car is discovered in a garage along with some newspapers between 1885 - 1915 in Clifton.

The car was built to run on gasoline and such cars were produced from 1905.

Hence the car found in Clifton were produced in 1905 or later.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument ?

A. For the first twenty years of car manufacturing in Clifton, cars manufactured elsewhere were more popular than locally produced models.

Irrelevant.

B. The antique car has a unique steering wheel design that is found only on cars manufactured in Clifton.

Additional information is provided which suggests that cars manufactured in Clifton had 2 characteristics -

1. Unique Steering wheel

2. Cars run on Gasoline

Careful observation of the passage suggests three important points-

a) Production of the Car in Clifton

b) The car was built to run on gasoline

c) Production of such Cars post 1905 since Gasoline cars started production in 1905.

C. The upholstery on the car's front seat dates from no earlier than 1930, so clearly someone was aware of the car's presence long after it was first purchased.

Weakens the assumption.

D. A car that dates from before 1900 would be considerably more valuable to collectors than a car dating from 1905.

Irrelevant.

E. Car manufacturers in Clifton were among the last in the country to switch production to gasoline-powered cars.

We don not have sufficient information.

IMO (B) whats the OA ?

Car dealer found a car and expect the year of manufacture of car to be between 1885 and 1915 because they found newspapers having of the given date range.

Author thinks that car is of 1905 because Clifton had its first car manufactured in 1905.

So, anything that emphasis on the car's production in Clifton strengthens the argument.

A. For the first twenty years of car manufacturing in Clifton, cars manufactured elsewhere were more popular than locally produced models.

This weakens rather than strengthen.

B. The antique car has a unique steering wheel design that is found only on cars manufactured in Clifton.

This option talks of a characteristic only found in cars manufactured in Clifton and since car production in Clifton began in 1905 the argument is strengthened.

C. The upholstery on the car's front seat dates from no earlier than 1930, so clearly someone was aware of the car's presence long after it was first purchased.

1930 falls outside the scope of our discussion (1885 - 1915)

D. A car that dates from before 1900 would be considerably more valuable to collectors than a car dating from 1905.

We are concerned with year of manufacture of car not with its value add. So out of scope.

E. Car manufacturers in Clifton were among the last in the country to switch production to gasoline-powered cars.

Does not help as does not give any additional information.

Hi psm12se,

Now that we know that this is a Strengthen question, we just need to link the various pieces of information to understand the author's logic, then find an answer that supports it.

The Facts:
-An antique car was found in a garage.
-Newspapers also found in that that garage date the car from some time between 1885-1915.
-The car was built to run on gasoline.
-The first gas powered cars MANUFACTURED in Clifton were produced in 1905.

The Conclusion:
-The car is probably no older than 1905.

The Logic:
-The author concludes that the car is no older than 1905; this is based rather heavily that the first cars MANUFACTURED in Clifton were produced in 1905. We need an answer that further ties this car to cars manufactured in Clifton.

The correct answer is B; it provides a connection between the car and the manufacturing/date.
