Overtime pay

by kobel51 » Thu Jan 16, 2014 8:27 am
An employee is paid 1.5 times the regular hourly rate for each hour worked in excess of 40 hours per week, excluding Sunday, and 2 times the regular hourly rate for each hour worked on Sunday. How much was the employee paid last week?

1) The employee's regular hourly rate is $10

2) Last week the employee worked a total of 53 hours but did not work more than 8 hours on any day.

In order to answer the target question, we need to know

"¢ The regular hourly rate,
"¢ The number of hours he worked on weekdays, and
"¢ The number of hours (if any) he worked on Sunday the last week.

(1) This is one of our three basic needs mentioned above. Insufficient

(2) This complicates the issue, but the smart thinkers can still save time as they can easily realize that the employee must have worked on Sunday as well. This partially serves the last two of our three basic needs mentioned above. Insufficient

Even if we take them together, we know that the payment could vary if the Sunday hours are taken less or more than any given weekday, which is always possible.
