Q People should undertake risky action only after they have carefully considered its consequences.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.
A

Mankind has always been driven by a result oriented approach. And it is obvious that positive results will turn out to be satisfactory for all of us. For a favorable result involving a risky action, it is essential to evaluate the aftermath of the action that have been performed. It is wise to consider and examine all sorts of consequences before performing any action which is risky.

All individuals, societies, or even governments have come across crunch situations often, where decision making is certainly risky. And they realize the need for a fruitful result. Consider the collapse of the Greek economy, a few years back, following the volatile economic shift in the European Union. The Greek government had to take a decision to uplift its tumbling economy, consolidate the unemployment rate. After considering possible consequences if they opted for a bailout, they went for it. The bailout was considered to be safe and it ensured the stability of the Greek economy, at least temporarily.

Also, a sense of safety prevails if careful observations are made before taking the action. There will not arise a feared situations, as things should be in control, even if the aftermath turns out be not favorable. Any action which involves high risk has a tendency to backfire. The backfiring is completely eliminated, upon proper examination of the consequences of that particular action.

However, when there are no other options available except for undertaking the risky action, it is okay not to consider the consequences. Imagine a high-voltage football game, maybe the finals of the world cup, where the team you are playing for is one goal down, and the game is in its dying moments. A situation will arise where all eleven players will rush towards their goal, even though their defense will seem insecure. This turns out to be the last resort. "Do or Die" will be the coach's instructions and the players' instincts on the field.

On weighing down all the points stated above, it can be possible to conclude that actions performed after examination of consequences will have more significance and fruitfulness than actions performed without consideration, but not on all occasions.

Q Leaders are created by the demands that are placed on them.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

A When the times turn testing, or when the going gets tough, we sense the necessity for a change. Kingdoms have fallen; governments have collapsed, only to make way for the dawn of a new leader. The demands set the tone for the much needed change in leadership. It is the need or demand which forces the society which aspires for a better future, to create able leaders.

There are situations which exerts so much pressure such that the person involved in it might develop a mindset involving change and leadership. Less than a century back, Mohan Karamchand Gandhi, a barrister travelling by train in South Africa was thrown out of the compartment due to the discrimination with respect to the color of his skin. This incident affected him so much that, Mohandas wanted to abolish all these discriminations. As history says, he would become the Mahatma of the nation India, driving away the British in 1947. Gandhiji had mounting demands on himself, on seeing the miseries of the people of India, atrocities committed by the British Raj, and it instilled the fire in him.

Yet another classic example of leadership can be mapped to dream which Martin Luther King had. The urge to fight for civil rights, and also the slavery and the apartheid which was prevalent in the United States, a few decades back added to the demands placed on Mr. King. "I have a Dream " , one of the historic speeches ever made could happen only due to the demands, which Martin Luther King had to face.

However, efficient leaders are produced, without any sort of demands or compulsions. Maybe, the person is gifted with natural leadership abilities. Cricket is a sport which majorly involves the captain's decision regarding field placements. And MS Dhoni who is often considered be the finest captains ever to have played the game, was not create due to demand or pressure. During the first tournament which he captained, there was no pressure on his tem to perform, as his team was blooded with youngsters, who had little or no experience. And Dhoni has proved to be a successful captain, winning almost all international tournaments.

Upon considering the various scenarios or episodes, it is possible to conclude that leaders are created by the demands they face, but not on all occasions. Leadership is an inherent quality in mankind, and it can also be exhibited without any external push.

Hi Vishal,

I'm guessing you're studying from outdated material--unfortunately, the Issue Essay is not longer a part of the GMAT! It's been replaced with the Integrated Reasoning section.

In such circumstances, the recommendation holds true. However, if the praised actions encompass saving drowning people in the tempestuous sea, confronting bank robbers and burglars, it may not be so. For the risk is to high for students to repeat.
