Hello there Abhi!
Good to hear from you dude, although I am afraid I don't have good news for you (But anyhow I prefer to tell it straight)....

As an Indian/IT/Male guy with what looks to be a middle-of-the-road work experience, Top 10 programs will be likely out of range even if you get a 760 on your GMAT (which hopefully you will anyhow! :) ). So you should probably revisit your school list.

If you break 700, then schools in range 10-30 (this is approximate of course!) will probably be in range for you, if you build yourself a good school list and make a logical application strategy.

Hope this helps, and if you have any follow-up questions, do not hesitate, my friend!

Hello Jon,

Thank you for providing your valuable response. Appreciate your straight forwardness. I have got two questions for you:

a. You have mentioned schools in the range 10-30. Since am not clear on what 10-30 implies, am taking it as the school rankings. According to the FT rankings, Fuqua, Tuck, Tepper and Smeal fall within this range. So do you mean i have chances to get inside these schools if i strategically apply for these schools?

b. Getting inside top schools:
--> Get a GMAT score of above 760 ( which as you said i will get hopefully- Thanks for the motivation :) )
--> I beleive i have diverse experience on various industries: a 3 year professional work experience, have experience leading, hiring, mentoring and coaching sport teams( ultimate Frisbee, soccer), handling multiple roles both in my professional work and in Toasmasters, also i have been working for NGOs for quite a long time.

I know that all the top schools do not encourage monotonicity(IT industry) among the applicants and expect diversity in all the applicants applying to these schools. Could you please tell me what else does it take to get inside the top 10 schools like Harvard or Wharton?

Hey abhi,

Good to hear back from you, man.
Let me maybe clear up some of the things I wrote for you.
Yes, when I say 10-30 I am referring to rankings, but not the FT rankings, rather the US News and World Report (which are considered the standard in the US, although the others should be taken into consideration). Again this is a pretty rough evaluation, so it's not like there is an absolute cutoff at 10 and then from 11 on you're good! ;) It's just more of thing in larger terms: Are you a Top 100 candidate? a Top 50? A top 30? a Top 10? etc... So for example from your list, I\d say Tuck would be the hardest, then Fuqua, then Tepper, with Smeal being the easiest. Roughly...

The thing about getting into H/S (Wharton is a bit easier) is basically there are two ways: 1. The classic route: You come from the right school, with the right grades, with the right job at the right employer (so graduate of IVY league with 3.5+ went to McKinsey worked for three years, etc.) 2. The wildcard way: You maybe don't have the best school or the best/most famous employer, buuuut you have amazing stats (GPA, GMAT) and a really impressive/unique story (already started up your NGO, which is running on a 200K budget and working with 200 volunteers).

To make yourself stand out is one of the best ways (especially when you come from a SUPER tough pool like yours) to well... get yourself noticed.. :)
It's more than just working in a few industries or having done some toastmaster stuff, and more looking for something that will make the Adcom folks do a double-take "Hey, wait.. I've NEVER seen THIS before!!!" Get my drift?

So we do need to work towards that as much as we can too. And THAT will help you boost your profile a whole bunch.

Jon,

Thank you for your realistic and valuable inputs. I belong to the 2nd category(wildcard) though. Actually my ultimate frisbee club is more of an NGO. I would explain it to you in private chat if you want to hear about it. And yes, as mentioned by you a wildcard would want to provide the Adcom with the "Woah factor" in their profile to seek attention. Once again, thank you for your time. If you have any other feedforward/suggestions for me, please do let me know.

Regards
Abhi
