Inference hard to infer

by imskpwr » Thu May 30, 2013 5:58 am
"Advertisement: Today's consumer expects a level of personalized customer care that was undreamt of only recently. Every advance in personalized care increases customer expectations. The company that is satisfied with its present level of customer care will soon find that its customers no longer are. At Courtier Services, our goal is to meet or exceed our customers' expectations.

Based on the statements in the advertisement above, which of the following must be true?
Courtier Services's goal can only be met if continuing improvements in personalized customer care are possible.
A company that fails to anticipate customer expectations is bound to provide poor customer care.
Courtier Services will steal customers from its competitors unless they adopt its goal as their own.
If a company is satisfied with its present level of customer care, then the quality of its customer care is sure to decline.
Courtier Services presently meets or exceeds its customers' expectations for personalized customer care."

In my opinion this should be A.
Courtier services wants to meet to exceed its customers expectations, which are always increasing, so this goal can only be achieved continuously if improvements are possible always.

What is the OA
Replying a query takes patience and time. The least a person can do is to thank the reply.

Courtier Services's goal can only be met if continuing improvements in personalized customer care are possible.

Is that correct?

IMO D , I think it rephrases the statement - The company that is satisfied with its present level of customer care will soon find that its customers no longer are.

CS goal => customer expectations

advances in personal care ---> increasing customer expectations

to get => customer expectations must have continuous advances in personal care

For all inference questions, keep in mind that the answer choice you pick MUST BE 100% TRUE, given the information provided. Let's look at this question:

Courtier Services' goal is to meet or exceed customer expectations. There is some other information about customer expectations also given in the question stem. We need to pick the choice that is a logical inference that can be made from the information provided.

B: We have no way of knowing whether this is true. There is a difference between expectation and response. The company may have provided great customer care, but the customer may not have been satisfied. Incorrect.

C: We don't-know-can't-say (DKCS) anything about CS' competitors and whether they adopt CS' goal as their own. Incorrect.

D: This is similar to option D. The question says 'The company that is satisfied with its present level of customer care will soon find that its customers no longer are'. All we can glean from this is that even if a company is satisfied with its current level of customer service, its customers may not be (because their expectations are increasing). We DKCS whether the service will decline. Incorrect.

E: All we know is that CS intends to achieve this goal - we DKCS what their present status is. Incorrect.

This leaves us with the right answer choice A. A fits both the points mentioned in the question stem:
1. Customer expectations are increasing
2. CS' goal is to meet or exceed these
The only way to satisfy #2 is by improving their service level.

Hope this is clear.
