Whether or if

by Nightmare » Thu May 02, 2013 8:54 pm
pls help me to solve this

Those with a cynical turn of mind might speculate if the new corporation, eager for profit, might not have started the rumor that caused its competitor to declare bankruptcy.

1 speculate if the new corporation, eager for profit, might not have started.
2 speculate if the new corporation, eager for profit, had not started
3 speculate if,in its eagerness for profit, the new corporation started
4 wonder as to whether,in its eagerness for profit, the new corporation did not start
5 wonder whether the new corporation, eager for profit, had started

Those with a cynical turn of mind might speculate if the new corporation, eager for profit, might not have started the rumor that caused its competitor to declare bankruptcy.

1 speculate if the new corporation, eager for profit, might not have started. [Usage of If is incorrect]
2 speculate if the new corporation, eager for profit, had not started [Usage of If is incorrect]
3 speculate if,in its eagerness for profit, the new corporation started [Usage of If is incorrect]
4 wonder as to whether,in its eagerness for profit, the new corporation did not start [Usage of whether correct. But the sentence is too wordy]
5 wonder whether the new corporation, eager for profit, had started [CORRECT : Usage of whether is correct and the sentence is concise][/quote]

'If' is wrong and we usually speculate on things that happen. Here the usage of negative sense like "had not" or "might not" sounded odd to me. A B C D out !

Hence E !
