Hey Arpan -

Despite the fact that you cross-posted this in multiple forums which is sort of a no-no, and despite the fact that you posted a seriously too-long resume that we had to wade through to get the important data we needed about you, we're gonna answer your query because we think you got some bum advice on that other thread.

While it's true that most top MBA programs prefer post-college work experience - 5 years is actually the average - it's by no means a requirement. And we don't have nearly enough information on what your startup is in order to say that it would not qualify as full-time experience. Some people do in fact launch full companies from their dorm rooms, and the adcoms give some credit to that. More importantly, the previous response you got made it sound like this startup experience is worthless. Not at all. If you've been hustling to build something from scratch at the same time as getting good marks in your degree program (multiple degree programs?) at a well-regarded university, well, that says a lot about you. You seem like the type of go-getter who the bschools are interested in.

And, even more important: THERE ARE SPECIFIC PROGRAMS DESIGNED JUST FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU!!!

HBS has the 2+2 program, where current college seniors can apply into a special system of 2 years work experience and then a guaranteed spot in the incoming Harvard MBA class after that (so if you were to apply now, you'd be starting at Harvard in 2016, if we did our math right). Yale has something similar called the Silver Scholars, and IESE has the Young Talent Program. These are all PERFECT for you.

In addition, Stanford will consider candidates currently in school and will grant them a deferred admission to a future class if accepted.

All of these are viable options for you.

Of course, if you're interested in TFI then go for it - it's a great way to give back and have some experiences and develop the resume. But it's no guarantee of admission to bschool; it does count as post-college work experience but it puts you in a nontraditional track (has certain challenges for the applicant) and also, we don't see how that fits together with your startup stuff. It could complicate the story significantly. If you're inspired, then yes! Do it! But it's not going to make it any easier to get into bschool than it would be now.

So basically, we think you got some bum info on that other thread, and we want to encourage you to keep exploring your options - since you have many!!

Please let us know if we can help out along the way.
