Hello! This is the message forum to ask questions to GMAC, the makers of the GMAT exam. Unfortunately, we cannot help you with individual practice questions. Please re-post these questions in one of the main message boards, where I am sure other students and tutors will be glad to help you. Good luck in your studies!

I believe C is correct.

Although partially destroyed, the archaeologists were able to infer from what remained of the inscription that the priest Zonainos was buried in the crypt.

(A) Although partially destroyed, the archaeologists were able to infer - Incorrect modifier

as gughanbose rightly said that the archaeologists were not the one who were destroyed ! :)

(B) Although partially destroyed, the archaeologists had inferred - Incorrect modifier
Same as Above
(C) Although it had been partially destroyed, the archaeologists were able to infer
(D) Partially destroyed though it had been, the archaeologists had been able to infer

Incorrect usage of tense!

(E) Destroyed partially, the archaeologists were able to infer - Incorrect modifier
Same as A

What is OA?

C is correct. (i think so)

Explanation:
A and B: Although is used without a subject and also modifier problem and tense issue
C: Now ALTHOUGH has both subject and verb. Tenses are correct. Destroyed (past perfect) ---> were able to infer (simple past)
D: Incorrect tense. 1 past perfect and 1 past tense is required in a logical sequence.
E: Were archeologists destroyed partially?
