by varun0629142 » Fri Apr 19, 2013 9:13 pm
When is the right time to commence writing essays. Most of the colleges have R1 in September. I plan to start writing the essays in June. Please advice and assist.

Cheers

Hi

Starting in June would be really good as you would get sufficient time to refine your essays.
Do prepare why MBA, why now, career goal, achievement stories - these are commonly asked questions in B-School application.

I would start thinking about your essays as soon as possible. Obviously, you will want to focus on your GMAT first, and get a solid score out of the way...but then I would move on to brainstorming and content development phase of the application essays. When time is on your side, and you can spend months crafting your story, refining your leads, and editing transitions, you will be much less stressed and, therefore, have much more fun. That said, June is a sufficient amount of time, even for Round 1, but the pressure will start mounting quickly, especially if you have essays to complete for 6-8 schools.

Essay content development and editing is my favorite part of the process, when working with clients, so let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. I wish you all the best.

That sounds right. Although most schools don;t actually release till July. But still, some schools will have their questions out, and anyhow you can work on items that will change very little if at all (like the career essays).

July would be great!! Your application is the most crucial aspect that will determine whether you will be invited for the interview round or not. So, It's very important to start with it as early as possible. Ensure that you have completed the application form in all respects and that it looks professional.
A few tips for your application essay:
1.Do not write your essays based on what you think the admission committee wants to read, instead introspect to identify what motivates you, your ambitions , long term goals and how doing an MBA will help you attain them
2. Answer the questions to the point and do not exceed the maximum word limit.
3. Identify situations in which you have displayed exemplary courage, leadership and personal initiative.
