Let Length (x) be 20 and Width (Y) be 5
And cost equals 50.
So price per square foot equals
Cost/Total Area i.e. L*B = 20*5 = 100
X*Y = 20*5 = 50/100 = .5/sq ft
To get price per yard
50*9/XY
Hope this helps!

Hi wawatan,
A simple technique may solve this problem more easily;
Carpet area = XYsqft
If the area XYsqft costs $50?
how much 9sqft costs ?
= (9/XY)*50 = 450/XY
If X ==> Y,
and A ==> B.
then B = (A/X)*Y
Cheers
