Got 620 after 3.5 months revision. Very :-(

by GMAT? » Thu Jan 18, 2007 4:55 pm
Hi all,

Took the GMAT today and scored 620 (Q:39 [58 percentile] and V:36 [80 percentile). I'm dissappointed. I need to get around the 700 mark.

I studied for 4 months and went through OG 10th edition - Each question twice. I also learnt the verbal and quant concepts sections from the Kaplan and PR books, although I didn't do many of the questions in these books.

I reviewed my mistakes and learnt alot from the process.

I took the folllowing CATs:

GMAT Prep 10+ times, 4 PR CATS, 4 Kaplan CATS, 2 Manhattan Review CATs, and 1 score.800 CAT. In the GMATPrep I initially scored around the 620 mark, but later upto 700 (I think this was because I had started to recognise the questions).

I'm now going to retake the exam in 5-6 weeks.

As you can see maths in my weaker area - what should I do to improve it? Any suggestions. I now recognise most of the question in OG 10th. I'm also worried that I won't get accurate predictions of my GMAT score in practice exams as I recognise alot of question in them - esp. GMATPrep, PowerPrep and PR, which I think are the most representative.

I'm stuck - Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't reach your goal. It looks like you have some work to do in both the verbal and math section to reach 700+.

I'm interested in seeing how your performance had improved during the course of your study. Can you list some of your practice test results? You don't have to list all of your test scores, since I know you took a lot of them.

thanks for the reply.

I got 590 the first time I took a GMATPrep exam. Most of my GMATPrep scores where around the 640 mark. Two days ago I did score 700 on GMATPrep but I think this was due to the fact that recognised a lot of the questions.

On PR my range has been 580 to 680 but mostly around 620 mark.

KAPLAN range 510-560.

Manhattan range mid 500s.

Hope this further info helps.

I think in the maths I'm not able to grasp the question quick enough to answer it.

You've indicated that you've never broken the 700 barrier in your practice tests. I think you are right about your latest GMATPrep, that you performance may have been colored by your familiarity with the questions.

It sounds like you are having issues with pace? Are you re-reading the questions frequently?

When you go through your practice questions in the next few weeks of your studies, make sure that you do it in a timed environment.

i'm surprised you mention re-reading the question - I do often have ro re-read questions at least twice.

what to do think is the best way to solve this problem

thanks

by the way i did practice questions under timed conditions - i would give my self 2 mins to do maths question - so say 20 questions in 40 mins, and similiar for the verbal.

This is a really difficult one to solve. The one suggestion I do have is to force yourself to read the prompt just once, and see how this affects your performance.

I think you need to work on pacing yourself slightly faster if you are averaging 2 min per problem.
