Indian from NIT

by abhiggn » Tue Jun 19, 2012 8:23 pm
Dear sir,
I am from India. I took the gmat but managed to score 620(Q-47,V-29)and AWA-5 in my 2nd attempt. In my 1st attempt I fall ill and managed only 560. I am from NIT(most prestigious college in India after IIT). I have a GPA of 9.02 out of 10. My college name is NIT Jamshedpur. I am presently working as an Assistant Manager in India's largest automobile company Maruti Suzuki. Presently, I am having experience of more than 2 years and a month. In my company, I have been graded as a star performer in previous year's appraisal. I won two awards in my company for my project-1)Best group performance for new initiatives for newcomers and 2)Best inhouse automation project.I have a good academic record. 10th-86%, 12th-88%. Also I was 3rd in my branch during my course of engineering.I also have a national scholarship in the field of drama.I was the co-ordinator for many events during my college tech-fest.

I am not going to apply in the top 10 universities of USA as I have financial constraints. I am looking for good US universities with fees approximately $40000 to $50000 and also some good colleges in Canada where I have chances of getting admission. Please help.

Dear Sir,
You have a very nice profile. Great grades. A nice Industry in India that is NOT IT (Which will be to your advantage! :) ). and what seems to be a preeeeeetty strong work experience. Right now your weakest link is your GMAT. I feel you can do really well if you have a good GMAT (80+ points more than what you have now). Be aware that a higher GMAT score will greatly increase your chances not only of getting in at top programs, but also at getting scholarship offers! So if money is a concern, I would make retaking the GMAT a PRIORITY for you.

But Sir, I heard that too many attempts of GMAT leave a negative impression on the admission committee. Is it true? I know retaking is a good option. But still with this score of 620, can I aim at the state universities like IOWA,SUNY BUFFALO and some good colleges in Canada?

Regards
Abhishek

Well, I would say it's necessarily true. I guess if you took the GMAT 9 times, it would be a lot. But 3, 4 times is pretty normal. And although there may be a slight disadvantage to taking lots of times, it's little in comparison to having a lower score.

For schools like SUNY Buffalo, sure you could get in with even your score. But my idea was also that with a higher score, you would get better money offers. So, with a 700, you can still get into Buffalo, but maybe with a HUGE scholarship!

wouldn't that be great?
