Profile Evaluation Urgently Needed

by DKCD » Sat May 05, 2012 10:05 pm
Hi there,

I am a final year B.E. student from Delhi, India doing my Engineering in Polymer Science and Chemical Technology from Delhi College of Engineering (one of the top 10 engineering colleges in India).
I recently gave the GMAT on April 24, 2012 and got a total score of 740 (97th percentile) with 50 in QA (92nd percentile) and 40 in VA (89th percentile).
Before typing in any information which gives details about me, I guess it would be better to post my Resume, as it would probably give you a fair idea about my profile.
The biggest issue bugging me at this point of time is the absence of GPA system in my college (we are just given a percentage at the end of each of our 8 semesters), so please give me a workaround for this problem.
If I go for an MBA, my preference would be ISB-India, Duke, Chicago Booth; basically any college in the top 25 list from Financial Times (https://rankings.ft.com/businessschoolra ... kings-2012) would do.
Also, I have absolutely no problem with MIM courses, especially the ones in top B-schools in Europe, such as HEC, ESCP, Insead, LBS, LSE, etc. On the other hand, I am really starting to like the idea of going to HEC or ESCP or Insead for an MIM!!!
Please evaluate my profile and guide me as to what course of action I should take: Should I wait for 2-3 years work experience and then apply for MBA OR start applying this year itself for MIM courses?
Please ask for any information that you feel is missing in my Resume, and I will be prompt to reply.

Thanks in advance!

Dear Sir,
First of all for your GPA equivalency you have this wonderful site: https://www.wes.org/gradeconversionguide/

Secondly for the MiM vs. MBA, this debate is more about YOU and finding what you need. Either can be good for boosting your career. It depends on your expectations, hopes and needs though. IF for example, you want to get out of India right away and start your career living abroad an MiM now makes more sense. IF you have good opportunities in India, or prefer for other reasons (i.e. Family) to stay in India, then start working and do your MBA later. There is no program that is "better" or even "preferable". They are just quite different, and appropriate for different people at different stages.

Hope this helps,

Thanks a lot for the amazing response. It has made a lot of things clear for me.
:-)
Now, I know that this is really early in my life to go for an MBA or MiM, but the thing is that I wish to start my career with a prior knowledge of 'Management'. I would like to leave India as soon as possible, and venture out to achieve my goals as soon as I complete my Management course.
More details about my goals and a few more things which are not in my Resume are:

My SHORT TERM GOALis that I wish to enter the ALTERNATE ENERGY field by working for a 'giant' in this field as soon as I complete my degree.
My LONG TERM GOAL is that I wish to apply my knowledge of Engineering and that of Management I wish to acquire in the coming years to venture into the field of RENEWABLE ENERGY, especially that related to Organic Photovoltaics (OPVs), having done a huge project on the same at college too (details are in my resume). I have tried to learn more about this field by starting the GoGreen@DTU society, being involved in the OPV project and doing my latest internship in a company manufacturing Solar Cells!!!
I wish to attain General Managerial knowledge along with Entrepreneurial knowledge so that I can possibly start my own company related to the OPVs mentioned above.
I have tried to build as many managerial, leadership, team-working and people skills as possible at college to help enhance my personality and my skill set (as evident in my Resume).
I already have 2 job offers, 1 as an Analyst at Grail Research (a company dealing in Data Analytics & Consulting) and 1 in Corporate and Professional Services at Evalueserve (a major company in the Knowledge Process Outsourcing field), and I wish to join Grail Research, if I have to, starting this July.
I am more interested towards Masters In Management, and preferably would like to join the course around August 2013, that is after a work experience of 1 year.
I have recently started learning French and wish to give the DELF - A1 exam in a few months.
I already have a very basic knowledge of German too, having studied it for 5 years at school, but at a very basic level.

Now, looking at all this, my BIG question is:
DO YOU THINK I HAVE A GOOD CHANCE AT SECURING AN ADMISSION AT HEC, PARIS or ESCP, PARIS or LBS, UK FOR MiM IF I APPLY FOR THE 2013 FALL PROGRAM ?

Thanks in advance for all your help...
:-)

With what you have written, then yes, it totally makes sense for you to aim for an MiM.

I think that with your numbers and your two job offers, you make yourself a solid candidate. I would add another two to three schools to your list though, to ensure an acceptance, and widen your range. One thing that would help you even more though, is if you can secure a position in the industry of your choice BEFORE you enter your MiM. Since you already know what you want to do, why not start already? Of course either of your other two jobs are great!

When it comes time to writing your application, you will need to think about how to fit your job choice into your goals (but no need to base your job choice on your goals.. as goals are easily tweaked)

Hope this helps!

Thanks a ton there Jon.

You have helped me a lot by removing my doubts. Now I would be able to think more clearly and with a wider perspective!!!

Thanks a lot again...
