by winniethepooh » Thu Mar 08, 2012 2:56 pm
Between 1990 and 2000 the global economy grew more than it did during the 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture to 1950.

B. Between 1990 and 2000 the global economy grew more than that during 10,000 years, from when agriculture began

C. The growth of the global economy between 1990 and 2000 exceeds that which has been for 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture

D. The growth of the global economy between 1990 and 2000 exceeds what it has been for 10,000 years, from when agriculture began

E. The growth of the global economy between 1990 and 2000 exceeded what it did for 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture

Can I get a concrete reason as to why is A (the OA)

preferred to B?
Also, please let me know a good reason why B is incorrect?(can't find any)

A is the best as the comparison is correctly done. In B growth is wrongly compared to economy. it should be growth to growth comparison as in A.

The major error between A and B is the use of "that" and "it".

That - demonstrative pronoun. It refers to the noun, but not the exact copy of it.
It - third person personal pronoun. It refer to the noun, the exact copy of the noun.

Here, "it" is perfect as in the original sentence.

Hope this helps !!

Here is one more reason:

A uses: from the beginning of agriculture to 1950

from x to y and in this case both x and y are noun which is not the case with option B.

Is DID in A correct? IMO DID without GROW somewhere else in the sentence does not make sense.
