Team Case Competition

John,

The question I am going to ask is in no way related to a B School application.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I am invited to attend the 'Scholarship Weekend' at Simon. There is a team case competition that I am required to participate in, as a part of this event. Would you be able to help me understand how team case competitions work, how are individuals evaluated, and, finally, how I can prepare to perform at least moderately well?

Sure dude--a case competition means that youll have 4-6 people on your team. There will be a case that youll read--something 5-10 pages long. It will be a story about a business, and at the end it will ask what YOUR recommendation is. So it might be about Corona in 2009. They are losing money, and you have a few options as to how to proceed. What is your choice, and explain why. Be prepared to do this in front of a number of your peers...

There isnt much you can do to prepare for this--just be ready to take the lead from time to time, and let OTHERS lead in other moments. So if there is something that you know well, step up and lead it. When someone else is eager to lead a portion, let him do so. Show that you have what it takes to be a team member, AND a leader.

And you will be just fine. Hope this helps, and good luck!
